Milton Feist (1907-1975) A Mount Vernon Native Who Spanned Two Different Worlds: Music Publishing Pioneer and Rabbinic Spiritual Leader. Uncle of Richard Feist our 1958 Davis Classmate

There are certain events that are designed for you to catch up with. And below is an amazing one.

Here is a feel good Mount Vernon, New York story that I want to share. About 6 months ago I received a collection of books from my brother, Cantor Mike,  and among the them was a volume called Ach Sameiach, Viewing Life Through the Lens of Joy, written by Rabbi A. Leib Scheinbaum (Hebrew Academy of Cleveland, 2023). Mike thought these books would be a welcome addtion to the 6,000 book Harry Rosenbaum Judaica Library temporarily stored by the Jewish Historical Society of Fairfield County in the State Theater on Hope St. It had been an active lending library and home to literary salons and weekly children's events for over thirty years.

As I leafed through the short paperback of 128 pages, I came across the words born in Mount Vernon, New York.

Well that was enough to capture my attention to focus on an  amazing life story with its beginnings associated with our family home at 131 Esplanade Drive. Dad was always proud to relate that the original builder that lived in our thirteen-room home built in 1914, was a music publisher named Leo Feist, the father of Milton and grandfather of our 1958 fellow A.B Davis High School  graduate Richard Feist. (His comments are recorded  on the second link below.)

Well, as I continued to read, I learned that Milton Feist was the exemplar of a pious man, a Tzadik with roots in the secular world of business. At age 4, Milton was struck with polio and spent the rest of his in a wheelchair. Despite his infirmity and chronic pain, Milton joined his family business which meant dealing with the "unconventional, the bohemian and creative artists who frequented Greenwich Village."

His family, with Alsatian roots, was not observant; yet, Milton, despite a busy workaday, became a devoted student of Rabbi Yehoshua Mereminsky (the grandson of the Chofetz Chaim) spiritual leader of the orthodox community of Mt. Vernon and pulpit Rabbi at Congregation Brothers of Israel (CBI), located at South Eighth Ave. (Rabbi Soloman Freilich 1924-2021 succeeded Rabbi Mereminsky to become the longest serving Rabbi in Westchester County with over 50 years of spiritual leadership.)

Milton became consumed by the study of Torah, Gemara, Hassidism and Mussar (ethical character refinement): He received his ordination as Rabbi Meir Feist by the noted Rabbi Mendel Saks, the son-in-law of the Chofetz Chaim.

Rabbi Scheinbaum and other writers who personally knew Rabbi Meir Feist all attest that--despite all the infirmities of his physical condittion-- he was always radiant with an inner light of joy, with a "face that shone."

I consulted with the Director of the Media Center at Mt. Vernon High School to determine if Milton graduated from A.B. Davis High School which would have been in 1925. Unfortuately, the 1925 yearbook is the only one that is missing in her collection. She did however check in earlier and later Yearbooks and did not locate his name.

Here are some links to articles that give remarkable insights into the character of this Tzadik, a man of esteemable character traits recorded by those who were fortunate to learn with him.

CLASS BRIEFS PLEASE KEEP THEM COMING

Ina Geduldig Becker

Ina Geduldig Becker, who never misses a reunion (a "beat'), continues to stay in excellent shape; she has been a regular attendee of Rich Barnett's '(59)  biweekly ballroom dance classes in the Somers, NY area. She recommends "Remembering Mt. Vernon" written and edited by Bruce Fabrikant, Class of 1960. She writes: "it was fun talking with you and your wife."

 John Tripodi

John Tripodi who flies up annually from Florida to be with us always spices up conversation with his glowing remembrances of growing up in the South area. He looks great, sounds great and writes:  "Thanks for your hard work on behalf of the class of '58, the Premier Class."  By the way, John  has an attic full of memorabilia he plans to share with us.

Jack Brophy

Jack Brophy is a regular presence at all our reunions. Built solid, our tough talking labor lawyer  continues his adversarial pose --and why not,?  His briefs are tersely delivered and who's to argue in front of a Pro.

Dick Schwartz

Dick Schwartz is a volunteer who continues to pay back for the great public school education he received when his family relocated to MV in 1950 and moved into the home built by music publisher Leo Feist, granddad of classmate Richie Feist.  Here are his last two postings from among the over 500 he has written over the last 15 years.

Peter Solender

Peter Solender keeps in touch from the Buffalo, N.Y. area. He recalls my dad drove both of us to  school each morning, our playing competitive basketball in his back yard area. Pete and Ronnie Costa members of our Camera Club both received accolades for their photographs.

Mike Margulis

REACHING OUT TO
Mike Margulis:  A number of Mike's friends have requested updates on his  career. He was one of two our classmates voted the 'Most Bohemian.' He is pictured in our yearbook seated  in a chair with guitar in hand besides Susan Iushewitz.  The MV Daily Argus reported his graduation from Oberlin College (along with Ken Canter) with a Bachelor of Music from the Conservatory of Music. He was a member of the Oberlin orchestra and wind ensemble. He spent his junior year in Salzburg, Austria and studied at the Mozartium.

Any one who can help us  continue connecting the dots in Mike's career, please let me know so I can share. rjschwartz.ny@gmail.com

My New Job as Class Coordinator of A.B. Davis Class of 1958

It's been a short year and a half since I assumed the position of Class Coordinator for the Class of 1958 at A. B. Davis and what an eventful tumultuous--yet satisfying-- year it has been.

First my deepest thanks, though posthumously, to my much revered predecessor Kathy Delaney, without whose dedication-- spanning a period of over 55 years-- my task would be impossible. She did an  an admirable job of "keeping tabs" on some 460 of us and keeping accurate records, spread sheets, etc. She is pictured below on the right, followed by myself, Ina Geduldig Becker,  Jesse Shereff  at our first annual reunion in June 2013 at the Davenport Country Club in New Rochelle. Sadly, Kathy passed away in 2017. Here  is a tribute to her.  Jesse passed away in 2021.

I also wish to thank Rich Barnett, Class of '59 for all the work he and his team of class coordinators have done since graduation: Charlie Siegel '59, Fred Diringer '59,  Mary Ann Bartolini, '59 , Al  Demaio '61, Michael Ganz '55, Mary Ann Bartolini '59, Lowell Willinger '60, Robert Scott '57. Del Shilkret '57, Ronnie Grosch,'63, Joel Kurtzberg '64.

I feel suited for the tasks ahead as my supportive role at the Hi-News as shutterbug inspired me to pursue a number of careers in advertising space sales and publishing Brooklyn's Community Magazine. My website also includes 500 plus articles that I have posted on  California and Oregon living, aviation, tennis, the arts, ethics, book and movie reviews, celebrations  of National Poetry Month and podcasts that I have and still to continue to lead at my "Literature at Lunch" series as well as Poetry Podcasts.

A Happy Happy Story of a Rekindled A.B. Davis Romance

Peter Hollgren, class of 1959, has been a regular attendee of our annual A.B. Davis reunions.  At the 2022 reunion he is pictured below at the head of the table facing the camera.

While attending Davis, Peter dated Holly Westedt, also class of 1959. After they graduated they went their separate ways and found new partners in marriage. After they were both widowed,  they rediscovered each other and married last December.  Kudos to you both.

"Outstanding success" A.B. Davis Reunion, Pleasantville Manor, NY, August 2023

The scene of our annual A.B. Davis Reunion at the Pleasantville Manor.
The Classes of 1955 and 1958 are seated around the first table at the left.

58 graduates ranging from graduating classes 1953-1964 gathered together on Wednesday, August 23 at the picturesque Pleasantville Manor at the  eponymous Country Club for our tenth annual reunion. Below are comments from Rich Barnett the prime organizer of the event.

" The luncheon was an outstanding success, thanks to your persistence and hard work. We had a turnout of 58 people. I want to thank you for a job well done.  The attendees enjoyed themselves and had a great time mingling with people from other the classes. It was more like a family reunion than a high school reunion. The size of the venue was just right for the amount of people we had. I believe most them left looking forward to next year and will tell their friends about it."

Seated above are graduates from classes 1955 and 1958.
